Washington Township
One of Burlington County’s most rural municipalities, Washington Township is a Pine Barrens community of forest roads, river settlements, campgrounds, marine trades and historic places rather than a conventional town center.
At a Glance
Pine Barrens Township
Washington Township lies entirely within the Pinelands and includes the small communities of Green Bank, Lower Bank and Jenkins, along with extensive public forest and river corridors.
Mailing addresses can mislead
Many in-town locations use Egg Harbor City or Chatsworth mailing addresses. NJTGO checks the actual municipal location rather than treating a postal city as the municipality.
Outdoor economy
Camping, paddling, boating, boatbuilding, forestry and river recreation are unusually important parts of the township’s local economy.

Public Safety
Emergency: 911
Fire and emergency services are provided through local volunteer/public-safety organizations and regional/state agencies. Use official township information for current non-emergency contacts.
Education

Washington Township’s local school district is non-operating. Township students attend Mullica Township schools under a sending/receiving arrangement.

Washington Township students attend Cedar Creek High School through the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District.
History, Nature & Community
Batsto Village
The preserved iron-and-glassmaking village at Batsto is one of the township’s major historic destinations and the best-known visitor gateway to this part of Wharton State Forest.
Green Bank
Green Bank retains historic community landmarks including the former school, church/cemetery area and historic commercial buildings along the Mullica/Wading River landscape.
Lower Bank
Lower Bank is a small river settlement associated with the Mullica River, historic church and cemetery sites, marine trades and the Route 542 corridor.
Wharton State Forest
Large portions of the township are shaped by Wharton State Forest. Conditions on rivers, primitive campsites and unpaved forest roads can change, so state alerts are worth checking before a trip.

Local Businesses
Washington’s business base is small but distinctive: marinas, boatbuilding, forest/farm work, campgrounds and paddling services.
Food & Drink
Prepared-food choices inside the municipal boundary are very limited. The guide keeps the list honest rather than importing nearby restaurants.
Visiting & Lodging
Camping, cabins, RV stays, paddling and forest history make this one of Burlington County’s most outdoor-oriented township guides.
